An Eye on Kokeshi

January 15, 2010
KOKESHI MANIA
Kokeshi dolls are japanese dolls made out of wood with no hands. They remind me of a kind of wooden toys (not kondapally or nirmal toys) I had when i was a kid (its a bride, groom and the family kind of set) but i dont think my mom still has them… Will sure post a picture in future if she has any left.
History
I was looking for simple amigurumi patterns to keep my hands occupied as i could concentrate on anything for more than a few minutes… its then i came across Kokeshi doll patterns.

Crochet - kokeshi

Yarn: Local Acrylic
Hook: 2.5mm
Others: Stuffing, tapestry needle, embroidery floss and dried beans
Size: 3.5″
Pattern: Kokeshi Dolls on Suncatcher Eyes

Notes:
Ofcourse i have to change something or else in a pattern.. I rarely follow it to the dot.
1. The original is a top down with a flap done seperately at the bottom; I did head and body seperately and joined at the neck.
2. I dont remember changing anything in the hair part but it sure came out different.
2. Added some dried beans at the botton for some stability.
3. The flower in the head is a small pom-pom and an embroidery floss mouth is an addition.

And then the mania continued…
I found an embroidery pattern of Kokeshi doll offered free on Sublime stitching flickr group and free-handed it onto a plain white plastic box.
Craft - Glass paints - Kokeshi

Hilighted the lines with a Permanent marker as i am out of liner (used of glass paints)
Got out my 5-yr old glass paints (by Camlin) which are still good and carefully filled the drawing.
As there is no black in my set, the hair is a combination of orange+blue.
Finally got myself a cute medicine-box (i think you can see all the flaws…).

P.S: Both the projects are done sometime in November last year, its just that i am posting them now…lazy.. lazy… lazy
