Day 9 – Knitting Group

October 29, 2008

October 23, Thursday

A friend of mine did a research for me and found out that there is a knitting group in Chatswood. So i called yesterday and let them know that there will be a new person coming in.

The “DCC Knitting Group” is held every thursday from 12:30pm to 2:30pm in Dougherty Community Centre / Craft Room. I found my way using the internet and my trusted street map book and went in exactly at 12:30pm. The was partially occupied already, most of them are in their 50s and 90s (no wonder DH complains that i hang out with grannies ;-)) and there are just two young people beside me.

The Craft Room is a big room with lots of chairs and tables, a big inbuilt cupboard/shelves on one side and a small pantry near the window. The organiser showed me some of the knitted stuff the ladies made for charity: scarves, booties, baby vests, knee afghans, hats and more. What attacted me most were these “Slippers with soul”, there are a one size fit all slippers for the diabetic and people with blood circulation problems. As there no ties or anything like that, they will keep your feet warm and help a bit with blood circulation in the feet. The pattern was easy and i got a copy and some yarn to make some for charity.

The organiser tied me up with a lady so that i can chat along while i knit and here is the surprise… She is a Brit but lived in India till 8 years ago… She can fluently speak in Telugu, Tamil, Bengali and Hindi. Her ansestors came to colonial India along with the english army and she was born in India. There was ofcourse another lady with similar story who lived most of her time in Calcutta.
There were all surprised to know that an Indian Girl that too from southern India can Knit and Crochet 😀 and they couldn’t belive when i said that i learned to knit from the internet.
I am planning to refine my knitting so that i can knit faster and also learn continental purl while i am with these experienced knitters.
I chatted away as i made some fingerless mitts with the yarn i bought yesterday..

No Photos as i didnt take my Camera with me. But next week i will….
