Any Indian Online Art/Craft Supply Stores?

October 18, 2007

There isn’t much activity going on my arty and crafty side, so i was going through my stash when i came across a set of paint brushes.

When my husband was on trip to Canada sometime back, he told me about this store that he saw (In Montreal), which was a wonderland to artists. I asked for a set of synthetic flat brushes when given a choice. I don’t want to talk about the price, but i swear that they are best ones that i have come across. There is this “Utterly Butterly” feeling when painting with them. The brush glides so smooth, mimicking the movements of my hand… its truly a pleasure to paint with them.

This drove me to see if there is any indian site that sells art and craft materials online, No Luck. There are some thousands of Websites across the world and some good bargains on ebay, but the shipping cost always discourages me. As of now, i think there is no website that sells art/craft material in india.

I checked the site of Pidilite, they have neatly organised all the products.
As for Fevicryl, they are planning to sell online and are in the process. Lets see….

The Camlin‘s site says about the products that are available from their stable and also the price range, but doesnt sell online.

I normally purchase paints/colours from Landmark and all other craft stuff from local shops. I dont have a problem going to a physical store and doing my purchase, I love that as i get to feel the product before i spend on it. But sometimes I just want to buy online for various reasons. Hope somebody comes up with a arty/crafty online store in india soon.

I am planning to make some ceramic beads this weekend. I think i have the basic stuff, ceramic powder and white glue. I got two acrylic colors and gold dust somewhere in my stash to experiment with. Will Post the pictures and if everything turns out well, i will also post a small tutorial next week.

I was thinking if there any art n craft blogs from people in india or of indian origin. If you know about a blog like that, please leave a message.
If any crafters from chennai stumbled upon my blog, do leave some comments…

I have to make a day trip to my parents place tomorrow, lots of travelling – have to charge my pod and also stuff some sudokus to kill the time.

Edited (22 Sept 09): Some of the online stores that i have found are in my craft supply page.

What type of craft materials are you searching for? There are a couple of indian online craft stores but the catch is that they insist for minimum order as they are primarily wholesale suppliers.

    Hi,

You do have art supply store in Chennai. Its called Hindustan Trading company I don’t know the exact address. But I can give you the location details. In the Royapettah High Road and Avvai Shanmugam Road junction there is one building called Justice Pratapa building, which hosts Vitan super market also. This building is near to Sitaraman & Co, the law book sellers. Hindustan Trading Company is on the first floor of this building. You can find brushes and paints that are imported from abroad in this store. Do check this out and let me know how you like it.

    Hi Gomathi,
I landed her by accident, but I am thankful for that.
I wanted to get some top grade material for my watercolors, but could not locate any suitable shop. Landmark and Connexions are OK, but not really top quality.

I got what I was looking for at Hindustan Trading Company. I could locate the place easily, thanks to your directions.

Thanks a lot for your superb recommendation !!! Cheers.

Hi, I was wondering how much you paid for your art materials in the Hindustan Trading Company, as I am thinking of buying some watercolor materials myself for my travels through India.
I don’t know if it’s better off buying them in India or here in England before I go.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks Andy

I too happened to come across this site by accident. Yes, try out ‘Hobbyideas.net’ its should be helpful. I want to know if there are any ideas or tricks that one needs to keep in mind when working with ceramic powder.

    Anyone, any suggestions?

Prob a bit late to reply to any of you, but Hindustan Trading Company is the best there is. ANy art materials you need, he will get it for you, if he doesn’t have it there at the time. Very helpful staff as well.
It is dangerous to go in there with lots of money! My husband and I are both artists and we always go tehre with no credit card, and just as much cash as we intend to spend. Otherwise you WILL over spend. It is an art material paradise for Chennaites!
The old art material supplier, was Perumal Chetty. He used to be the only one around in the 70s and early 80s, and all the art students, artists, architecture students etc. used to flock to him. Since then competition has prob [ushed him a little into the sidelines. He has been reduced from his large store on Mount Road, to a single counter in the Landmark Store in Spencer’s PLaza.
Feel free to ask me about stuff around Chennai.
Right now there is a Kala Mela happening at the Lalit Kala Academie, Egmore, and at the Museum Grounds. Go and check it out. On till the 20th of March. Many well known as well as fresh out of college students have set up stalls displaying their art works. Good for exposure to people who usually don’t go to art galleries. Many people find the gallery scene quite intimidating, so this fair/mela type of “stall” arrangement is quite a good idea.

I stumbled into your site through Google. I have purchased materials from http://www.babajis.com. They are Mumbai based and have very good service. The courier charges for about 250 gms of materials were just Rs. 30/-. The owner is a very polite gentleman. They scanned whole of Mumbai, including Camlin, to get me Indigo watercolor tube. Amazing. Their site is well organized too.

    Hi,

its so good to finally stumble upon someone with similar interests as mine. I keep ordering a lot of the craft stuff from some of the UK websites. Their huge range and varity of stuff avaible is impressive. However, each time i flinch at the freight that i have to pay for it. One doesnt mind paying for the stuff but for freight!!! ummmm…

Anyways, i have been on a massive lookout for variuos suppliers across India for craft stuff. In delhi, i could find None. I dont know what’s wrong with delhiites!!!

As for hobby ideas, they have stores in and around Mumbai only with no online store and No, they don’t courier stuff from their shops to you.

For quilling, though i found this site http://www.dimensionscrafts.co.in which seems good. I am currently going to start my 1st order with them. Letsee. However, i ordered parchment kit from this pergamano supplier in mumbai. & the service and stuff was pretty good.

Wish there was some place in delhi, wherein i could go and feel the stuff before buying it. Also, if you have any info about any craft club in delhi, please lemme know. There’s so much more to learn. 🙂

    Thanks!!!

      Hi Shalini…
Good to know you. Are you only into paper craft or any other crafts. Most of the crafty stuff is made in developing countries…including India. Since advertising things over the ineternet or in papers for crafty stuff is not popular here, we may just not find it. I think the lanes and gullies of old delhi markets will have some of the stuff that you need.

though i do knitting and painting as well bt mostly i enjoy doing paper crafts… specially card making and scrapbooking…

agreed… have found lot of stuff wen trying new areas and their local markets, especially embellishments… infact i found this amazing pack of backing paer on my recent trip to a local shop in Agra…

bt what most lures me in the online shops is the new techniques… like the embossing and flocking is my current muse… by the time u can find and arrange all the stuff here in India, you kind of are soooo exhausted…

bt all in all its such a relaxing hobby that i am simply in love with it… and with such an amazingly supporting husband that i have been blessed with, my craft shopping sprees are well taken care of 😉

anyways nice to finally share all this crafty its bits with some Indian…

    do stay in touch!!!

When in Chennai, I head for Hindustan Trading Co. They are the best and are very knowledgable on what they sell. They even offer suggestions when you ask. Since they are in touch with many artists, they are well veresed in art forms, media, and much more. It is just not a mere paint shop…. I can spend hours just doing nothing but looking around. It is absolute delight to see their art supplies!!!

For art supplies in Hyderabad, you can check out a store in Abids called Saremisons (hope I spelt it right). This shop is diagonally opposite to Chermas and is one of the oldest and famous shops for stationary and office supplies. Recently, I had been to Odessey in Jubilee Hills and I guess they also had decent collection of art supplies.

    Cheers!

Hello, I found this page while looking for polymer clay in Mumbai. Hobby Ideas does not have a variety of colors, called up some of their branches and they barely have two or three colors – blue, orange, pink. Not even white or black, or basic colors. They said stocks would not be coming. Very disappointing as their website shows a large range. Does anyone know any stores in India or even websites I could order from, that ship to India? Please help! Thanks! 🙂
